As ambassadors of peace, 111 gold-coloured Guardian Angels are currently adorning the façade of the pilgrimage church of St. Clemens in Telgte. To mark the 375th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia, the City of Telgte invited Ottmar Hörl to develop a sculptural installation featuring guardian angels.
Belief in guardian angels is as old as mankind. Christianity as well as Judaism and Islam share a concept of guardian angels who, as envoys or messengers, reveal something of the Divine power, helping, and standing by, us human beings. Ottmar Hörl's sculptures encourage you to take a new perspective on the subject, inspiring people from all over the world. After various angel installations, including "Angels over Munich" at the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Munich in 2009, "City of Angels" in Ingolstadt in 2012, and "Lunch Break" in London in 2019, the City of Telgte and its visitors can now enjoy the golden sculptures.
Everyone who encounters the installation, becomes part of the art project. After it has been presented to the general public, the installation will be dismantled. The shift from the public to the private sphere is part of the artist's concept. The 111 angels from the installation have already found their godparents. More Guardian Angel sculptures are available from the Ottmar Hörl Online Shop.
The installation will be displayed in front of the façade of the Church of St. Clemens in Telgte from 21 May to 3 July 2023.
