It is the 250th anniversary of the first publication of Goethe's epistolary novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (1774).
In the summer of 1772, at the age of 23, Johann Wolfgang Goethe came to Wetzlar as a trainee. He wrote his epistolary novel within four weeks, which quickly became the first bestseller in literary history.
The city of Wetzlar is celebrating this important anniversary with an extensive series of events. For this occasion, conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl is creating the serial sculpture "The Young Goethe". The hundredfold version of the golden Goethe sculpture can be seen on the stairs of the Eisenmarkt and in the Lottenhof. The artist Ottmar Hörl deliberately chose the exhibition venues because they have become literary settings in Goethe's "Werther".
The art event at the Eisenmarkt in Wetzlar appeals to various target groups and the young Goethe becomes "tangible" for everyone through his presence.
From 9. June to 14. June 2024, the young Goethe will be on display as part of the anniversary of Goethe's novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther".
